Be In Favor Of The Shopping Spree

In my young adult life I have viewed “splurge spending” as a negative practice. “Save whenever possible” was one of my many mottos- followed by “no matter what people try to tell me; McDonalds is never not delicious.” (That one doesn’t always ring true). I remember when I got my first debit card I was terrified to use it. Even though it wasn’t a credit card: I would always ask myself “would Dave Ramsey think this is okay?”, every time I swiped that little red debit Master Card.

Finances are tough. Many of my anxieties involve money. Too often they have taken over my life. But today I am here to tell you that sometimes- you just need to spend money…

Not too long ago, I had an awful week. Everything felt like it was going wrong and each little annoyance put me over the edge. Saying I was overwhelmed by life was an understatement. So you know what I did to make me feel better? I went to the mall.

During my drive there I blasted all my favorite summer tunes, took many deep breaths, and felt at ease. Once at the mall, I honored childhood Michaela and bought an Auntie Anne’s pretzel (it was delicious and has been a favorite of mine since I was ten years old). I told myself that I wasn’t going to worry about prices and just allow myself to relax and shop. A lot of clothing was tried on and in the end I only spent around thirty bucks. It was the most fun I had had in a really long time… the whole experience just felt good for me.

The rest of that week was pure goodness, pure joy. No I am not saying shopping and spending solves all of your problems but I believe there is freedom in allowing yourself to indulge from time to time. I am not in favor of carelessly dropping money wherever you go, but I am in favor of treating one’s self here and there. The point is that you don’t feel guilt when you do something for yourself. If you have a small amount of financial freedom, or can cut back in other areas for a few weeks: do it! You deserve the shopping spree, the fancy dinner, or whatever that thing is that sparks joy for you.
